In May 2007 my husband I went to a conference in Dallas Texas and decided we would take a few extra days and ride our bikes. I have a 2004, 650 Yamaha VStar Custom and he has a 2002 Honda Goldwing. I have been riding now for about 4 ½ years and this was my longest trip yet.
We started out on a Monday morning around 11am and headed west on I-20. Fortunately, the traffic through Atlanta was not too bad that time of morning. We made it to Tuscaloosa, Alabama around 4 PM and spent the night there. We did not want to ride the interstate all the way, so from Tuscaloosa we took US Hwy. 82, which took us all the way to Arkansas. We didn’t have to go to Arkansas to get to Texas, but I wanted to do as many states as possible on this trip and Hwy 82 was a nice road. We spent the night in Texarkana before heading to Dallas the next day. By the way, in Texarkana one side of the road is in Texas and the other side is in Arkansas. We stayed on the Texas side.
The next morning it was raining a little, the only rain we ran into the whole trip. Our plans were to hit the tip of Oklahoma and get another state in, but that would take about 2 hours round trip before we made it to Dallas and storms were predicted, so we decided to scratch that and go on to Dallas. This was a good decision, because there were tornadoes, in fact a tornado hit in Dallas late that night, but we were safe and our bikes were in a covered garage.
We stayed in Dallas three days before heading home by way of Louisiana to get another state in. What a trip! I didn’t know if I would get another opportunity to ride cross country again, but I have several trips planed for 2008.
